The Binghamton Story
For decades, Binghamton and the surrounding Southern Tier region thrived on manufacturing and defense work. Like many American industrial cities, it faced tough transitions as traditional manufacturing declined.
What’s happening now is different. Binghamton University has become the region’s economic engine, and federal and state investments are pouring into the exact technologies that will define the next decade especially energy storage and advanced manufacturing.
The result? A startup ecosystem that’s still small enough to feel personal, but backed by serious resources and momentum.

The Startup Ecosystem
At the center of it all sits the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator, a 35,000-square-foot facility right in downtown Binghamton on Hawley Street. Since opening in 2017, it has become the practical hub where founders get co-working space, labs, mentorship, and programming. In 2025, Koffman members and graduates secured significant funding as the broader Southern Tier ecosystem continued its upward trajectory.
Binghamton University’s Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships runs programs like HATCH (paid internships connecting students with local startups) and supports I-Corps teams that have created hundreds of jobs and raised tens of millions in follow-on capital.
